Natural dyeing

Students will explore natural dyeing with plants found on the farm: madder root and black walnut. They will learn the process from gathering to preparing the dye bath, using mordants and examining the effects on different fibers. Students will be encouraged to bring a garment from home to dye and natural fibers for dying will be provided.

Students will gather fall vegetables from the garden for a farm to table snack and with extra to take home.

$65 per student (Mordants, dyes and fibers will be provided)

Artful Harvest

Work in the market garden watering, weeding, harvesting and then prepare a farm to table snack. Students will then create artwork using the vegetables and flowers they found in the garden as inspiration.

Journal Design

This course is geared towards middle grade students who are interested in art and design.  We will explore different techniques for designing on paper such as ink, printing, and collage.  Then students will get an introduction into book binding by assembling journals made from handmade paper.

Kid’s CArpentry

This course is geared towards students who would like to learn basic carpentry skills and familiarize themselves with wood working tools. Over two days (10AM-2PM), students will plan, design, execute and add finishings to a wooden project. This course combines math, design and building skills. Measuring, cutting, carving, sanding, screwing, hammering… will all be explored in a collaborative group setting.

Bugs, Birds and Butterflies

S.T.E.A.M. concepts of the Fibonacci sequence, symmetry, patterns in nature, and life cycles will be explored. We will take a nature walk on the farm to gather materials for the day’s activities. Then, students will create a texture painting using found objects. Lastly, students will build their own bird’s nest to take home.

Paint and Poetry

April is National Poetry Month. Join us for fun with painting our own versions of Sharon Creech’s famous, Love That Dog poem. Then we will look to Japan and create a Haiku. We will use a collage technique to illustrate our Haikus with blossoming tree branches. Finally, we will set a stage and perform from a selection of well known poems.

SANTA'S WORKSHOP

Students will become little elves hammering, sanding and painting to create a wooden toy of their choice. A fire and hot cocoa will keep everyone warm. Then the group will take a winter walk to feed the wild birds and pet the farm animals.

Students will familiarize themselves with the instruments, tools, and design needed to see a project from start to completion. There will be an emphasis on safety protocols when using tools involved in beginners carpentry.

Classes will run from 10:00am-1:30pm over two days (9/17, 9/18)

Introduction to weaving

Rhythmic, meditative, tactile; these are the traits of this ancient art form that make it beloved by both children and adults. Weaving teaches conceptual understanding of cloth, laying a foundation for other textile arts. In this course, students will make a loom using reclaimed materials and learn to weave on a stationary loom.
